The Wildlife Care Association (WCA), a local nonprofit dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of native wildlife, is facing a historic surge in animal patients this year. They are currently on track to care for over 10,000 animals, shattering previous records.
This dramatic increase in cases, which includes everything from orphaned baby birds to injured mammals, is putting a severe strain on the organization’s resources. “We are already nearing 7,500 patients today,” said Sandra, a spokesperson for the WCA.
A Constant Cycle of Care
The WCA’s dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly around the clock to provide essential care for their diverse range of patients. This includes hand-feeding neonates every few hours, administering medical treatments, and providing a safe and enriching environment for recovery.
“Depending on the animal and its condition, feedings can be as frequent as every 30 minutes to every two hours,” Sandra explained. “It’s a continuous process that requires significant dedication and resources.”
The Vital Role of Wildlife in Our Ecosystem
Beyond providing compassionate care to injured and orphaned animals, the WCA plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of our local ecosystem. Native wildlife serves various important ecological functions, including pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control.
“Ensuring that native wildlife can be returned to the wild is incredibly important to us,” said Sandra. “Every animal we release back into its natural habitat contributes to a healthier and more resilient ecosystem.”
